Winds Calm, Sea Rippled

These are the words that describe the days of bright sun and glassy sea, the weather of August and early September on the southern BC coast. Expeditions disintegrate into vacations. The sails stay furled. Progress is made on those books to be read, the skin to be tanned. Distant mountains are crystal clear. Beaches beckon. We relish it because we know it won't last.

"Expeditions disintegrate into vacations."

This sentence also typifies my trip to SE Asia. It started out as more of a cultural expidition to see museums, archaeological sights, eat new foods, and meet locals.

Then I went diving in Nha Trang. It was so AMAZING that from there on out, other than Angkor, the trip turned into a beach bumming, scuba diving, beer drinking vacation.

I suppose if I really wanted to keep it a cultural adventure I could have, but the diving was just too good to pass up. I also guess that part of a big trip is just going with the flow and following what your heart leads you to. As long as you are honest with yourself about where you are and what you are doing I think that everything will turn out fine.

Yes, yes to going with the flow. Or - in sailor's terms - wake up in the morning and see which way the wind is blowing. Following up on your diving and also your time in Santa Cruz, again recommend the book "Beyond the Outer Shore" - biography of Ed Ricketts, by Eric Hamm
